What is Cross-Chain Communication?

Cross-chain communication between different blockchains is necessary to ensure the decentralized functionality of the technology. Because blockchain projects end up having different structures, sometimes data exchange between chains may not be possible without additional software or third-party intervention. It is for this reason that interchain communication methods are becoming more and more in demand. Currently, there are several cross-chain communication processes for exchanging information between blockchains.

Atomic swaps are the most popular cross-chain communication tool between blockchain developers. Unlike buying cryptocurrency on an exchange, atomic swaps give network participants the ability to transfer tokens from wallet to wallet using a special smart contract.

Stateless Simplified Payment Verification (SVP) is another blockchain cross-chain interaction tool. This tool allows blockchains to assess the validity of transactions without having to store all transaction information. This process enables communication between blockchains without the need to exchange large amounts of data between each other.

In addition, the best approach to interchain communication is usually determined by the underlying characteristics of the two blockchains. For example, the lightning network operates solely on the principle of atomic exchanges. However, due to the wide variety of blockchain-based systems, atomic exchanges are not always the best choice for enabling interchain communication.

Other interchain communication tools include consensus pools, relays and chain federations. All of these communication processes involve different levels of monetary involvement.

Interoperability is one of the main points of focus for blockchain developers, as this is a feature largely missing from existing blockchain systems. While blockchain bridges are one way to ensure interoperability, cross-chain communication tools also contribute to moving toward more functional ecosystems.

The lack of cross-chain communication between different systems currently prevents blockchain from operating at maximum efficiency. The more these processes evolve, the more applications and implementations will open up to blockchain developers. Not only that, but cryptocurrency users will benefit from increased transaction processing speed and easy exchange between different tokens instantly. Interchain communication still has a long way to go, but significant progress has been made in this aspect of blockchain technology.
